Product Development: T-Shirts

It is largely accepted that the most popular t shirt designs revolve around a logo/image in the central chest area, as is the way with these branded/merchandised t-shirts below.Working with this idea, the below t-shirts are put forward as potential product designs; available in a variety of popular, un-garish colours. The designs (recycling the logo and image ideas so as to create a "brand") were made to look un-specific to age or gender, making them available to the entire family.

The found images of t-shirts were found from the product selling sites:

Product Development: Posters

Inspired mainly from my favourite poster design, I began to use the aerial views as the basis of a poster design, with the ideas working around using the identifiable and dynamic shape of the aerial view as an abstract but bold image. the prototype, unrefined design (not yet including the infomation about the friends scheme), as well as the poster that inspired it and some early quickly constructed ideas are below.

The above poster design for the Beethoven concert was taken from image-sharing networking site http://www.ffffound.com

Image Ideas & Development

Whilst we had initially begun using the idea of "sheep" as the central image to our products, we fell short upon receiving constructive feedback for the idea. We then "re-invented" the idea to use it as an icon for the children of the family to associate with. This idea progressed into using the image of a family of sheep on our products to use to represent and portray the family values of our friendship scheme.
Upon developing this concept and an actual image that would be presentable and approachable, where the idea once felt relevant and easily linked in with the Park, it began to feel tenuous and forced.

Still reluctant to actually include any single artists work in the designs, my focus turned to the (award-winning) architecture of the main building, as well as the geography of the park. This provided a stronger, more unique, visual link to the identity of the park. The solid, line based, vector images complimented well both the aerial views and "on foot" perspective views of the building.

Friendship Scheme Logo Ideas

I felt it was important that the "friendship" scheme had an identity, so as to give it the true feeling of being part of a club. I decided on the name "Yorkshire Sculpture Park Family Friends".
Looking at other significant galleries logos, what was obvious was the use of openly planned, plain type logos .
After A few experiments with layout, text and phrasing, I settled on the logo in the top right as this best reflected the Yorkshire Sculpture Parks current logo but stood out in it's own right. The idea second from the bottom, on the right column was also taken in to consideration for it's in-keeping design (using the circle form) but also being significantly different from the parks current logo.
Each of the galleries logos was taken from their respective websites:

Point Of Sale

This is the point of sale for the limited edition sketch books we are designing.

Fiona's sketches (Lamp Chop)

Sketched out a few ideas for a character, decided to go with the lamb look rather than the sheep look. Thought of a possible name but not sure at the moment, currently thinking 'Lamb Chop'.

Last image sketched in biro but really needs to be done in a fine black liner.

Launch Event Plan

As part of the project we were told we needed to plan a launch event for the 'friends' scheme. For this I came up with a name for the event, along with tagline, invite, activities, an advertisement and created a facebook group (which was deleted after it had been screanshotted).

YSP Make+Play day

Friends for life.

Event will take place on Thursday 25th March at the YSP- from 10am till 6pm

Activities;
> 3D Workshop, including;
> Mask Making
> Sculpture
> Kites
> Hide and Go Sheep
> Treasure Hunt

Facebook Event Screan Shots

Event Invite

This will be sent out to homes of prospective friends.

Online Advertisement

This will appear at the top or side of page where adverts often show.

Both the invite and online advert are targeted more towards the parents of children rather than the children themselves, as it is the parents who make the effort to take the children and the children are not yet at the age where they can take themselves.

Product Research

Ideas for sheep themed products.

First came across Cocoa's, which is a lovely little chocolate shop in Sheffield which does a veriety of different products but has a little bit of a natural theme going for it. Here is its buisness card and a few of its sheep themed products.

Next came arcoss a popular brand called Jelly Cat. It does a wide range of soft cuddley animals and as you can see her also does a lamb in different sizes, the two here are medium and large Muffin Lamb.

Finially came arcoss 'The Bakewell Soap Co', that do a range of handmade soaps and as you can see here (maybe) is a little soap in the shape of a sheep.

Jades Initial Design Ideas

Children's Lunchbox Design:

Children's T-shirt Designs:

Possible Logo:
Here are a few designs that I have come up with for some of the items we have chosen sell. Still going with the sheep theme for the kids I have designed some t-shirt and lunch box designs for the children. Then maybe a possible logo for the kids items. As these type of cartoon sheep would not appeal to the parents of the children.

Fiona's sketches and ideas.

So far we have the idea of a childrens group and a sheep character.

These are the first few sketches to just get the form right and start the ideas off. If its a younge age range then thinking lambs instead of sheep, the cuter the better.

Fiona's photos and first thoughts.

These first two images are from an exibition that can be found in the YSP's 'Art in the open air'. This one in particular is Henry Moore's 'Two Piece Reclining Figure'. I wouldn't imagine this sculpture having the same visual impact if it was placed indoors. The natural environment compliments its structure in a way that no man made setting could.

Whilst wondering in the huge fields to find this sculpture we did encounter mass amounts of sheep.

It wasnt untill choosing our target audience as children that the idea came to mind, and base the structure of this project around sheep.
Children tend to be hooked into a group or trend if there is something to assosicate it with. Linking this with the idea of friendship came the thought of childrens groups on package holidays, places like Butlins or Disney World.
Within these groups there usually is a designed character or figure that allows the child to assosicate the group with something. Like Mickey Mouse for Disney.
Thinking along these lines and linking it back to the YSP the idea for a sheep character and a childrens group were formed.

George's Image Ideas

I haven't done any "design work" as of yet (actually applying the images to products), I have, however, begun to work with some image ideas.
As previously mentioned, I initially ran with the sheep idea. It was decided these images were'nt as child friendly as they potentially could have been. Secondly, I began to work with the basic shapes of the actual architecture of the main building as I didn't want to distract from the fact that we are actually designing for the park which the building is central to.

Sian's Initial Design Ideas

Sian decided to do a few sketches of sheep as this was a central theme the group had decided on. The following are her sketches and as they are quite cartoon like Sian has decided to aim for the young children in our target audience.

Kim's Initial Design Ideas

We decided as a group that everyone would develop some design ideas after which we would come together to discuss and further develop one or more of these ideas. These are Kim's initial design ideas. Kim based a few of her designs around sheep as the group decided that they would use sheep as a sort of mascot for the young children to associate with the Yorkshire Sculpture Park. The team chose sheep as they are abundant in the Yorkshire Sculpture Park and Henry Moore one of the parks best known sculptors published a book filled entirely with sheep drawings and sketches.

Design Idea 1: A sheep design, this one somewhat abstract and quite modern. This design has the potential to be used on the sketchbooks, posters, T-shirts and lunch boxes or as a vinyl print. The cartoon like features of the sheep means it is aimed at the children in our target audience and the colour scheme can be changed as needed.
Design Idea 2: This design is once again aimed at the children in our target audience and could be used as a design for a lunchbox, poster or T-shirt. The text can be changed as needed.
Design Idea 3: This was designed for use on a T-shirt, poster or on the sketchbooks. Kim designed it to have a clean, sharp and modern feel. It utilizes one of the parks sculptures in the design and is more aimed towards the adults in our target audience.

Design Idea 4: This is Kim's design for a coffee cup clutch. This Henry Moore sculpture was used by Kim as she felt that it resembled a coffee bean and was therefore perfect for use on a coffee cup clutch. This is aimed toward the adults in the target audience.

Design Idea 5: This design idea is aimed at the children, more
particularly the girls in our target audience. Kim feels the cartoon appearance of the sheep as well as the love heart around it would appeal to young girls. This design can also be adapted to suit boys by the removal of the love heart and adding a different shape such a a blue triangle for example.
